“බක්මහ අකුණු” යනු ශ්රී ලාංකේය වේදිකා නාට්ය කලාවේ සුවිශේෂී සන්ධිස්ථානයක් සනිටුහන් කළ අමරණීය නාට්ය නිර්මාණයකි. සමාජය තුළ පවතින බලය, වරප්රසාද, ප්රේමය, කුමන්ත්රණ සහ මානව සම්බන්ධතාවන්ගේ සංකීර්ණ ස්වභාවය හාස්යය හා උපහාසය මුසු වූ රසවත් ආකාරයෙන් ප්රේක්ෂකයා වෙත සමීප කරවන මෙම නාට්යය, විනෝදාස්වාදය සමඟ ගැඹුරු සමාජ කියවීමක්ද ඉදිරිපත් කරයි.
ප්රංශ නාට්යයක් වන “The Marriage of Figaro” ඇසුරින් නිර්මාණය වූ “බක්මහ අකුණු”, නාට්යවේදී දයානන්ද ගුණවර්ධනයන්ගේ විශිෂ්ට නිර්මාණ ශිල්පය විදහා දක්වන කෘතියකි. 1963 වර්ෂයේදී ප්රථම වරට වේදිකාගත වූ මෙම නාට්යය, ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ප්රථම වරට භ්රමණ වේදිකාව (Revolving Stage) හඳුන්වා දීම තුළින් දේශීය නාට්ය කලාවේ නව පෙරළියක් ඇති කළේය.
