The Chamber Music Society of Colombo announced that it will present “The Voice in the Room,” a recital featuring the tenor Amar Muchhala and the pianist Johann Peiris, on Aug. 29 and 30 at the Goethe-Institut Hall.
The program offers an ambitious, cross-genre journey through French art song, Hungarian Romanticism, and 19th-century opera, designed specifically for the tight acoustics of a chamber setting.

The first half begins with four mélodies by Henri Duparc, setting poetry by Charles Baudelaire (“L’invitation au voyage,”“La vie antérieure”), Jean Lahor (“Chanson triste”), and Leconte de Lisle (“Phidylé”). The duo will then navigate Franz Liszt’s turbulent Tre Sonetti di Petrarca (Sonetti 104, 47, and 123), a cycle that translates Petrarch’s torment and devotion into virtuosic keyboard writing and expansive vocal lines.

After intermission, the performance turns toward the dramatic stage with three staple tenor showpieces: Giacomo Puccini’s mournful “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca; Amilcare Ponchielli’s soaring “Cielo e mar!” from La Gioconda; and Georges Bizet’s desperate “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from Carmen.

“Bringing art song and operatic literature out of the massive opera house and placing them into an intimate, transparent chamber setting is central to the philosophical spirit of ‘The Voice in the Room,’” said Lakshman Joseph-de Saram, the artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Colombo. “In a room of this scale, there is nowhere for a performer to
hide, nor is there any distance for the listener to escape into comfortable detachment. Every nuance of tone, every breath, and every inflection of poetic text becomes an immediate, unmediated encounter. In Amar, we have a singer whose dramatic range and international pedigree are matched by extraordinary vocal nuance, and in Johann, a partner
capable of executing Liszt’s scale and Duparc’s subtle colors with immense clarity. Together, they strip these monumental works down to their barest, most compelling emotional core.”

Born in Bombay and resident in London, Mr. Muchhala read French literature at Franklin & Marshall College in the United States before studying on the prestigious opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He made his Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, debut in the world premiere of David Bruce’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, subsequently originating the role of Alex in Søren Nils Eichberg’s Glare and covering Jonas Kaufmann in
the title role of Massenet’s Werther.

His wide-ranging international career encompasses European stages - including title roles at Theater Regensburg, Staatsoper Hannover, and Dorset Opera - alongside appearances with major UK ensembles such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and the Hallé.
Johann Peiris appears as the holder of the Malinee Jayasinghe-Peris Chair of the CMSC. The concerts are supported inpart by A. Baur & Co., the Tokyo Cement Group, and the Goethe-Institut.
